The interface is really clean and it allows you to do exactly what it stands for: find new keyword suggestions. Using information from their servers, Google can provide you with tons of potential keywords related to your initial keyword search in a few seconds.
However, data provided by Google is not as accurate as you might think because Google rounds averages and uses “buckets” to group keywords by traffic volume. This way, the higher the search volume of a keyword, the less accurate it will be.
Also, there are hidden keywords that Google won’t recommend. Google does this to provide a diverse cross-section of terms, but for marketers, it means you potentially miss out on huge opportunities.
In terms of PPC strategies, it’s really comfortable to use because you can place the keywords you discover in the ad groups and campaigns you choose directly, making this part of the process easy and fast.

Ahrefs is mostly known for backlink analysis; however, I find that it is also a great tool to use as part of your keyword research.
Ahrefs allows you to have super in-depth information about each keyword you choose, and it’s not only basic information, like the search volume, but it provides you with the first page competition, click rates and the keyword difficulty.
An awesome thing about their keyword difficulty information is that they estimate how many backlinks you’ll need to rank in top 10 for the keyword.
That being said, it’s not the right tool for getting tons of keyword ideas and suggestions. I would use it afterwards, once you have nearly completed your keyword research, and are about to choose which keywords to start positioning first, and you want to analyze those few keywords more intensively to make that decision.
This tool is great for knowing the keywords you currently rank for, their positioning and traffic. It gives you an idea of which topics and keywords are performing the best.
You can also use SEMrush to find related keywords to the ones that you’re positioning in the keyword overview search, but it’s not a tool focused on finding keyword suggestions for your SEO and SEM strategies. I see it more as a great tool for analyzing your website and competitors.
An interesting feature they have is their position tracking tool, that allows you to add keywords, and see how your site ranks on Google for that keyword in the location you choose.
However, you should be careful using SEMrush as it’s not 100% accurate and you can find information that’s incorrect if you compare it to Google Analytics, for example. They use estimations, and not actual data.
Also, they have a limited number of keywords in their database, so finding long-tail keywords with low volume is not that easy.
Another con is that you won’t have full access with a free account; if you want to make more than 10 searches per day, with more than 10 results per search or more than 1 project, you’ll need to upgrade.
10 results per search is definitely not enough for conducting a proper keyword research and the cheapest is $99.95 per month, so if you don’t have the budget to pay for a keyword research tool, this is not your tool.
